Comparison for auction companies
WordPress or a managed website for your auction company?
WordPress is the right choice for an auction company that has, or wants to employ, someone technical to run it: it is open source, endlessly extendable and portable. For an auction company that wants a fast catalog, registration and settlement pages without choosing hosting, installing plugins or applying updates, a managed site is the simpler fit. With WordPress the software is free; the time and the hosting are not.
The short answer
Choose WordPress if you have a developer who will host, update and secure it. Choose a managed site if you want none of that work.

- Build fee$697, after launch

Which is right for an auction business?
WordPress.org is free, open source software you host yourself; WordPress.com is a hosted service run by Automattic. Both are powerful, and both leave the site's structure, plugins and upkeep to you. For an auction business the real comparison is how much of the running of the site you want on your own desk.
Key takeaway: Choose WordPress if you have a developer who will host, update and secure it. Choose a managed site if you want none of that work.
Side by side
WordPress and a managed auction site, line by line
Twelve things an auction company should weigh. Where we state a fact about another product, it is listed with its source further down the page.
| What to weigh | WordPress | BidWebStudio |
|---|---|---|
| Speed and Core Web Vitals | Depends heavily on the host, the theme and every plugin installed. Well-run WordPress sites can be fast; many are not. | Custom-coded pages served from Cloudflare's edge, with 90+ PageSpeed as the build standard on every plan. |
| SEO control | Full control, usually through an SEO plugin you choose, configure and keep updated. | Done for you: titles, headings, sitemaps, canonicals, redirects, and a page per sale type and per area you serve. |
| Structured data (JSON-LD) | Usually added by a plugin or theme, or by a developer. We did not verify any structured data in WordPress core. | JSON-LD on every page type (Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList), matched to what is visible on the page. |
| Answer engines and AI assistants (AEO, GEO) | Possible with the right writing and plugins. Nothing does it for you by default. | Answer-first copy, visible FAQ blocks, consistent business data and an llms.txt file, from launch. |
| Hosting and security | Self-hosted WordPress.org needs separate, paid hosting. WordPress.com includes managed hosting. | Cloudflare hosting, SSL, CDN, DDoS protection and unmetered bandwidth inside the monthly fee. |
| Maintenance burden | Core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security are yours or your host's. | Ours. Updates, security and performance checks are part of the plan, not a task on your list. |
| Who does the work | You, a developer or an agency build and maintain it. | Our team builds it and makes every change: 5 revisions a month of any size, each within 2 to 5 working days. |
| Content and blog | A strong publishing tool. Writing and publishing articles is your job. | 2 researched articles a week on every plan, 3 on Block, written and published for you. |
| Design for an auction | A large ecosystem of themes. An auction catalog usually means an auction plugin plus custom work. | Designed around the sale: catalog, lot, registration, settlement and results pages, built to your brand. |
| Accessibility and policy pages | Depends on the theme, plugins and content. Policy pages are pages you write or buy. | Built for keyboard and screen reader use, launched with privacy, terms, cookie and accessibility pages. |
| Cost model | Free software plus hosting, premium themes or plugins, and developer time. WordPress.com sells monthly and yearly plans. | $127 a month plus a $697 build fee invoiced after launch. No hosting, plugin or developer bills. |
| Lock-in and ownership | Open source and portable. On WordPress.com, the XML export excludes theme design, customizations and plugins. | Month to month, 2 business days notice to cancel. Your domain is registered in your name and transferred free if you leave. |
Honestly
When WordPress is the better fit
You have a developer on staff or on retainer who is comfortable owning hosting, updates and security.
You want a specific WordPress auction or bidding plugin running directly on your own site.
Portability matters more than anything: WordPress is open source, and you can move it between hosts.
For an auction calendar
When a managed auction site wins
You do not want to choose between plugins, test updates before a sale or restore a site that broke on Friday night.
You want 90+ PageSpeed as a standard rather than something a plugin stack has to be tuned for.
You want catalog, registration and settlement pages built around your bidding platform, and changed on request.
What you get for $127 a month: the catalog, lot, registration, settlement and results pages, 90+ PageSpeed, hosting, your domain, 5 revisions a month and researched articles every week. The $697 build fee is invoiced only after launch.
Switching or combining
Moving from WordPress without losing your sale history
Most auction companies on WordPress have years of indexed sale and results pages. We map every one of those URLs to its new page and put 301 redirects in place at launch, rebuild the results archive from an export or spreadsheet, and keep your domain exactly as it is. You can keep WordPress running for anything else you use it for, on a subdomain, if you want.
- Step 1
Send us admin access or an export, plus a list of plugins your sale process relies on.
- Step 2
We map every sale, catalog and results URL to its new address.
- Step 3
We rebuild the catalog, registration and archive around the bidding platform you already use.
- Step 4
At launch the domain points at the new site and the redirects go live the same minute.

What the switch looked like
The review of our auction consignments pages was uncomfortable reading, in a useful way. Everything now lives in one maintained reference, with the duplicates retired or redirected. Updates stopped being a treasure hunt.

What we checked, and where
Every statement about WordPress on this page comes from its own website or help center, checked on September 18, 2026. Products and plans change, so check the source before you decide.
- WordPress is open source software licensed under the GPLv2, and WordPress.org states it powers over 43 percent of sites on the web. (WordPress.org, "About")
- Self-hosted WordPress.org does not include hosting, so you find and pay for hosting separately; WordPress.com includes managed hosting. (WordPress.com support, "WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org")
- On WordPress.com, installing plugins is available on the paid Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce plans. (WordPress.com support, "Plugins")
- A WordPress.com content export does not include your theme design, customizations or plugins. (WordPress.com support, "Export your website's content")

Questions about WordPress for auction companies
Is WordPress good for an auction company website?
It can be very good if someone technical runs it. WordPress is flexible and open source, but hosting, plugin choice, updates, security and speed tuning are your responsibility or your developer's, which is exactly the work a managed site takes off your hands.
Can WordPress run online bidding?
There are auction plugins for WordPress, and we have not reviewed them here. Our approach is different: we do not run bidding at all, we build the website around the bidding platform you already trust and link or embed it.
Is WordPress free?
The software is free to download under an open source licence. Running it is not: you need hosting, and most auction sites also pay for premium themes, plugins or developer time. WordPress.com sells hosted plans monthly and yearly.
Will I lose my Google rankings moving off WordPress?
Not if the move is mapped properly. We map every old URL to its new page with a 301 redirect at launch, so rankings and bookmarks carry over rather than resetting.
Can I edit the site myself like I do in WordPress?
You do not log in to edit pages. You send changes from your client portal, and each one is completed within 2 to 5 working days. For many auction owners that is the point: the site changes without anyone learning an editor.
What about plugins I rely on now?
Tell us what each plugin does for your sale process during onboarding. Most auction plugins cover things the new site handles in its own pages, such as registration forms, lot galleries and countdowns, or things your bidding platform already does.
Which is faster, WordPress or your site?
A carefully built WordPress site on good hosting can be fast. Our pages are custom coded, ship very little JavaScript and are served from Cloudflare's edge, with 90+ PageSpeed as a standard on every plan.
Do I own my site with you the way I own a WordPress install?
You own your domain, registered in your name and transferred free if you leave. The difference is that we host and run the site for you rather than you holding the software yourself.
