Comparison for auction companies
Hire a freelancer or use a managed auction website?
A good freelancer is the right call when you want a one-off build to your exact specification and have a plan for who maintains it afterwards. For an auction company whose catalog, terms and results change every week, the build is the easy part; the months after launch are where freelance sites stall, because every update becomes a new request and a new invoice. A managed plan prices the upkeep in from the start.
The short answer
Hire a freelancer for a defined one-off build you will maintain. Use a managed plan when the site has to keep changing with your sale calendar.

Which is right for an auction business?
Freelancers range from excellent to unreachable, and many auction companies have had both. This page compares the model, not any person: a one-off project against an ongoing, managed service.

Side by side
Hiring a freelancer and a managed auction site, line by line
Twelve things an auction company should weigh. Where we state a fact about another product, it is listed with its source further down the page.
| What to weigh | Hiring a freelancer | BidWebStudio |
|---|---|---|
| Speed and Core Web Vitals | As good as the freelancer's skill and the hosting they choose. | Custom-coded pages served from Cloudflare's edge, with 90+ PageSpeed as the build standard on every plan. |
| SEO control | Depends on the freelancer. Often set up at launch and not revisited. | Done for you: titles, headings, sitemaps, canonicals, redirects, and a page per sale type and per area you serve. |
| Structured data (JSON-LD) | Depends on the freelancer's experience. | JSON-LD on every page type (Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList), matched to what is visible on the page. |
| Answer engines and AI assistants (AEO, GEO) | Rarely scoped unless you ask for it. | Answer-first copy, visible FAQ blocks, consistent business data and an llms.txt file, from launch. |
| Hosting and security | Often arranged by the freelancer on an account in their name or yours, billed separately. | Cloudflare hosting, SSL, CDN, DDoS protection and unmetered bandwidth inside the monthly fee. |
| Maintenance burden | Usually billed hourly or by retainer after launch, subject to their availability. | Ours. Updates, security and performance checks are part of the plan, not a task on your list. |
| Who does the work | One person builds it; you or they maintain it. | Our team builds it and makes every change: 5 revisions a month of any size, each within 2 to 5 working days. |
| Content and blog | Typically not included. Articles would be a separate project. | 2 researched articles a week on every plan, 3 on Block, written and published for you. |
| Design for an auction | As bespoke as you want to pay for. | Designed around the sale: catalog, lot, registration, settlement and results pages, built to your brand. |
| Accessibility and policy pages | Depends on the freelancer and the brief. | Built for keyboard and screen reader use, launched with privacy, terms, cookie and accessibility pages. |
| Cost model | A project fee up front, then hourly or retainer billing for changes and hosting. | $127 a month plus a $697 build fee invoiced after launch. No hosting, plugin or developer bills. |
| Lock-in and ownership | Depends on the contract. Make sure the domain, hosting and code accounts are in your name. | Month to month, 2 business days notice to cancel. Your domain is registered in your name and transferred free if you leave. |

When a managed auction site wins
You want the catalog changed every week without negotiating a quote each time.
You want a known monthly cost: $127 a month, 5 revisions included, then $20 each, never hourly.
You do not want the site to depend on one person being available on the Thursday before a sale.
What you get for $127 a month: the catalog, lot, registration, settlement and results pages, 90+ PageSpeed, hosting, your domain, 5 revisions a month and researched articles every week. The $697 build fee is invoiced only after launch.

Taking over a freelancer-built site
If a freelancer built your current site, we map every page and URL, rebuild on our platform with redirects in place, and move your domain into your name if it is not already. If you still work with the freelancer on other projects, nothing about our site gets in the way.
- Step 1
Gather logins for the domain, hosting and current site, or ask the freelancer for them.
- Step 2
We audit the current site and map every URL.
- Step 3
We rebuild around a proper catalog, registration and settlement pages.
- Step 4
The domain is pointed or transferred, and the redirects go live at launch.

What the switch looked like
Previous projects left us a website and a memory; this one left instructions. It covers who to contact, how to request a change and what to check after publication. The site survives my holiday now, which it never did before.

Questions about Hiring a freelancer for auction companies
Is a freelancer cheaper than a managed website?
Up front, a freelancer's project fee may be similar to or lower than a year of a managed plan. Over time, updates billed by the hour, separate hosting and the cost of an unreachable developer before a sale often change the sum. Our plans are $127 a month plus a $697 build fee after launch, with changes included.
What happens if my freelancer disappears?
It happens more often than it should, and the usual problem is access: the domain or hosting is in their name. Before any build, make sure those accounts are yours. With us, your domain is registered in your name from the start.
Can a freelancer build a better custom site?
A skilled freelancer can build almost anything you specify. The difference with a managed plan is not the first build, it is who keeps it current every week afterwards and on what terms.
How do revisions compare?
A freelancer usually quotes or bills hourly per change. We include 5 revisions a month of any size, each completed within 2 to 5 working days, then a flat $20 per extra revision.
Who handles hosting and security?
With a freelancer, whoever set up the hosting, often on a separate bill. With us, Cloudflare hosting, SSL, CDN and DDoS protection are inside the monthly fee.
Can you work alongside my freelancer?
We build and manage the auction website ourselves, so we do not share its code with another developer. Your freelancer can keep working on anything else for you.
What if I already paid a freelancer for my current site?
That investment is not wasted: your content, photos, results history and indexed URLs all carry over. We rebuild the pages and redirect every old address so nothing already earned is lost.
How long does each take?
Freelance timelines vary with the person and the scope. Ours are 7, 10 or 15 days depending on the plan, counted from the onboarding call.
